Hikers Inc.
February 07 Profile of the Hiking CubHikers Inc - A Profile. Hikers Inc. was established in the year 2001. Its three founding members were Paul Singh, Richard Lewis, and Mario Russell. The club sought to infuse a new professionalism and energy into local hiking adventures that was hitherto unknown.
“Going one step further” became the vision of this new organization, which soon rose to prominence as the preferred hiking club for many outdoor enthusiasts. With this drive and vision the club undertook to introduce the “mother of all hikes’- the annual fitness hike from Blanchisseuse to Matelot. We have also visited Tobago -Tobago Hiking Extravaganza - and in 2008 we ventured into the Caribbean. The current directors, Richard Lewis, Roger Reverand and Michael Jattan all have varying degrees of hiking experience under their respective belts. Most importantly they all share one common philosophy and that is hiking must be fun for those who venture into the outdoors with safety always being of primary importance. Hence the origin of our mission statement,” Your safety and enjoyment is our priority.”
The directors are ably assisted by several like-minded leaders and officials whose contributions to the organization have been noteworthy. They are Adrian Rush, Marissa Loobie, Felix Lamy, Rhonda Beckles, Lalchan Ramsaran and Camille Mitchell. Our past leaders also deserve special mention. They are Aldwyn Archer, Brian Samuel, Randy George (R.I.P), Cecil Francis, Hayden London, Sunil Maharaj, Jai Baal and Joey Mohanlal. We must also mention here the support given by the Hikers Inc. Special Events Committee.
To underscore our belief in safety the directors and leaders have undertaken first aid training with the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and the Red Cross Society. Approximately two hikes are held each month. In terms of rating, hikes are classed as Easy, Moderate, Moderately Challenging, Challenging, Very Challenging and Extremely Challenging. Individuals are encouraged to make sure of their physical or medical fitness before beginning to hike. A visit to the physician is thus advised. At the beginning of each hike the leaders would address all participants drawing their attention to the “Important Guidelines’ listed in the quarterly schedule. The participants are then divided into two or three groups with two or more hike leaders assigned to each group. Each group has a first-aid kit, two-way radio, rope, and flashlights. Before a scheduled hike, the leaders would undertake to do a scout or “recce” of the trail to ensure that it is properly cleared and marked. A “recce” may also involve consulting with the local police station. Apart from our regular public hikes Hikers Inc. also provides tours for private groups and has trained teams to compete successfully in the annual BG Challenge. Hikers Inc. is a dynamic organization always open to change once it redounds to the benefit of the hiking public and is in keeping with their safety and enjoyment.
September 22 Important Safety InformationThe following is intended to enhance your safety and comfort during your hike with the club.
HIKERS INC. HIKE RATING GUIDE
Our hikes are rated as Easy, Moderate, Moderately Challenging, Challenging, Very Challenging and Extremely Challenging. SAFETY MESSAGE
We recommend that you DO NOT HIKE if you answer NO to any of the five following questions: 1. MEDICAL FITNESS: Are you medically fit to participate in this event? A visit to your physician is recommended before undertaking any type of new physical activity. 2. EXPERIENCE: Have you done a hike of similar difficulty in recent past?
If you have not hiked in the recent past, try an easy hike first, and gradually work your way up. Starting with a challenging hike may prove to be a very uncomfortable experience for you and lead to you never venturing again on any trail. 3. FOOD AND WATER: Have you enough food and water?
We recommend that you carry at least two quarts of water. If the weather is hot or if its is an open trail, you will need even more water. Drink plenty of water: it helps you stay cool in the humid environment! We recommend that you bring sufficient food depending on the length of the hike. Bring more than you need, just in case! 4. FOOTWEAR: Have you proper footwear?
We recommend hiking shoes on all our hikes. We suggest the Merrell or Columbia brand. Merrell is available at all Kenny's Stores in Trinidad and at Raymond's on High Street, San Fernando, Trinidad.Try them before buying, with the socks you intend to wear during the hike. Here are some tips for buying new boots: While considering size, remember that feet may expand during hiking. Purchasing a size that is 1/2 greater than what you normally wear may be helpful. Please no sandals or slippers.
5. CLOTHING: Have you proper clothing? Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing - t-shirts & long track pants( nylon material) is preferred. Ankle height socks should not be worn. Please no jeans.
OTHER ITEMS TO BRING
The following items will enhance your comfort on a hike. Bring any other items you may need. Keep the weather in mind and use your judgment. Cap with visor to prevent sunburn and glare on an open trail. Sunscreen Sun glasses Insect repellent spray Flash light with batteries Matches or lighter, kept in a dry bag First aid kit Extra t-shirt and socks stored in a dry bag Compass, with a knowledge of how to use one Whistle Toilet paper If you are on medication walk with it e.g. Asthma inhaler
GENERAL
1. If you have any questions about the hike, ask the leader. 2. Listen carefully to the announcements made by the leader prior to and during the hike. Follow the leader's advice closely.
